From: Juliet Fri, July 11 1997, 18:11:07 Los Reyes: The Gipsy Kings of Music
Hiya Rick:
I have the CD Los Reyes: The Gipsy Kings of Music. Band members for that CD inlcude: Antonico Reyes; Canut Reyes; Manuel Reyes; Patchai Reyes and Tony Reyes. The tracks inlcude: 1. Borriquito; 2. Pour Clementine; 3. Ciento; 4. Corona; 5. Belimbombero; 6. Caballo Viejo; 7. Bamboleo; 8. Annabella 9. Suenos; 10. Une Puigne De Feux; 11. Borriquito (Maxi dance version) 12. Belimbombero (Hot Gipsy mix)
This CD is on the EMPORIO label and was released in 1994 (EMPRCD504). This info differs from what was listed in CD Europe so I can't say for sure if this is the same recording. Although, I can say, most definitively, that those Gitanos were JAMMIN on this CD, especially the last two tracks!!!
From: Rick Fri, July 11 1997, 15:39:22 Los Reyes
i was just on CD Europe and saw an album by "los Reyes" it was called
"The gipsy kings of Music" Does anyone know if this is an actual
Reyes release (with nicholas, canut, etc.) or a release by their cousins?
I would appreciate if anyone could give me info as to who is actually
playing the record, and song information (new songs, old songs, releases, etc.)
Thanks.

From: Ana Fri, July 11 1997, 07:43:15 FLAMENCO PASSION
Hello to everybody. I would like to apologize to everybody. I did a mistake on JOSE REYES birthplace. Actually he was borned in NIZZA, FRANCE. This is just a small recapitulation of one of the CD from FLAMENCO PASSION that I got the other day and this is made from CHRISTIAN PHILIPPI. "In 1928 JOSE REYES was born in NIZZA. He grew up in the flamenco-tradition of the CATALAN gipsies, which his family belonged to. When he married CLEMENTINE, at the age of eighteen and settled down in ARLES, he already was the best flamenco-singer in FRANCE. But still he earned his living by selling textile, cloth, scrap iron and antiques. A decent gipsy-trade, which he did not quit until his death. In 1963 began the international career in the USA, where he was invited together with his cousin MANITAS DE PLATA, to play in the biggest concert-halls. For thirteen years the two flamencos conquered the hearts of their listeners in five continents. JOSE dipped his audience into emotional alternaiting baths with his husky voice, giving an impression of the ups and downs, pains and joys of a gipsy-life. Deeply impressed by his art the great SALVADOR DALI, dedicated to him one of his drawings. In 1975 JOSE REYES founded his own group with four of his sons PAUL, CANUT, PATCHAI, NICOLAS and his son-in-law JALOUL "CHICO" BOUCHIKHI: "JOSE REYES ET LOS REYES".With four extraordinary voices and five heavy grooving flamenco-guitars the family-enterprise at once was heading for success. Invited by Baroness Jacqueline de Goldschmidt-Rothschild JOSE and zerland. While they were there, they recorded tow LP's full of genuine feeling for Tudor. In 1977 an enthralled audience in the Paris Olympia was giving standing ovations to the REYES FAMILY. And then again in 1978 JOSE took his group to the USA. But he himself did not feel so good: an unusual weakness had taken hold of him. Back in FRANCE a medical examination resulted in lung cancer. Only a few days after the anual GIPSY-PILGRIMAGE to LES-SAINTES-MARIES-DE-LA-MER in May 1979
JOSE REYES died. The last holder of the archaic "CANTE JONDO" tradition in FRANCE had gone. His voice and his songs make him unforgetable. He still lives on in the hearts of his family and of his sons, who today worldwide achieve great triumphs on the same stages where he once performed, now known as the "GIPSY KINGS." And for the ones who speak FRENCH this is written by LUCIEN CLERGUE: HOMMAGE A JOSE REYES, CANTAOR, JOSE REYES etait un des derniers a savoir le flamenco profond, que les jeunes generations ont oublie.
<Provencal> 7 Juin 1979 by LUCIEN CLERGUE. Well as you can see I got out of the CD "FLAMENCO PASSION". Some of the CD the old ones from LOS REYES, you can find really great information on them. These are some of my favorite songs on the following CDs: from "FETE DE STE. MARIE-DE-LA-MER" are {JE CHANTE JUSQU'AU SOLEIL COUCHANT}, which means "I Sing Until Dawn", {MORITAS, MORAS} it has a wonderful beat, also {LE COEUR D'UN GITAN} "Heart of a Gypsy",o en espanol "Corazon de un Gitano", from HOMMAGE A JOSE REYES, CD are the following: {FANDANGO DE LOS REYES} singing: CANUT, NICOLAS AND JOSE in which my favorite vocal chords are NICOLAS, {HOMMAGE A JOSE REYES} that is sung by CANUT, dedicating a song to his Father, {A MA FAMILLE} "To my Family" by NICOLAS, which has an excellent rythm, and finally {FOU TU ME RENDS FOU} meaning "You drive me Crazy" "Me Vuelves Loco"is got an excellent beat. From L'AMOUR D'UN JOUR I like the following: {CETTE NUIT} "This Night" o "Esta Noche", is beautiful, {GALOP SAUVAGE} which is sung by PATCHAI. From LOS REYES, THE GIPSY LEGEND: {MAL D'AMOUR},{GIPSY FOR LIFE},{ITANA MORENA}, sung by ANTONICO NOEGELEN-REYES which I think he's got an excellent voice. {FUEGO}is instrumental and is beautiful! {SUENOS} has music from CANUT, PATCHAI and of course ANTONICO is the singer. From JALOUL "CHICO" BOUCHIKHI I like: {VAGABUNDO} and {EL VERANO} and from the GIPSY REIGN {LA NOCHE} which is one of my favorite ones of them all. This FAMILY are just so extremely talented. By the way I find CANUT EXTREMELY very attractive. He's got beautiful eyes, hair and lips. And that beautiful voice of his fits his Sensual Personality. I would like some girls to write me and tell me who do you find most attractive of them all: just curious. Also, I would like you to write me in SPANISH. Tambien escribanme en espanol. Pues quisiera saber de la opinion de la RHUMA FLAMENCA que me apasiona tanto. Bueno os quiero a todos. Recuerden, escribanme ! Well, I think that that's it. I would appreciated if you can give me more information of some more CD's of different groups. CIAO! QUE VIVA LA RAZA CALO! Je les aiment beaucoup! CORAZON CALAO, COOOOORAZON CALAO!

Thank you for writing.
I thought that the "Tierra Gitana" video was available at one of music stores
on the net, CD Teleshop in Germany. Also, they could transform it from the PAL
to the normal VHS, if you needed. I just checked out the site once again, but
unfortunately, it's not available there now.
Two my own videos are normal ones which luckily, I could get from my good
friends in the US.
If anyone who could help him about the video, please e-mail him.
I really appreciate your kindness.

Hi again Chie,
Tanks for the info about DJOBI DJOBA.
I have a question about the video TIERRA GITANA.
I wonder if you know if it comes in the VHS-PAL system that is used in
most european contries. I think CD-WORLD only has the american system.
Wich do you have and do you know any other musicshops on the net who
has it. The largest CD- videostore in Europe, THE ZONE, don't have it.
I'd be most grateful if you could help me with this.
Thanks and take care!

Hello and Welcome to my GK page "Bamboleo"!
And thank you so much for your comments.
As you know, informations on the tablature are so hard to find.
So it must be very helpful for fans who play the guitar.
I'm so glad that you had such a great time at their concert in Phoenix.
I also really like Canuto's voice. It's filled with love, pothos and passion.
"Montana" is so beautiful song indeed, and I love it too!
Please keep in touch with "Bamboleo". Thanks again.

From: Juliet Sat, July 5 1997, 07:49:38 Does anyone have info on a group called Complices? I just saw a music video for their song 'Ojos Gitanos' off their Esta Llorando el Sol album. The video was definitely shot in Ste Maries de lar Mer and Arles. The people in the video were, I think, some of the Reyes and Baliardo family members. I saw Andre Reyes and Paco Baliardo in the background, there were quite a few gitanas dancing who were in all the other GK videos, and if I'm not mistaken Manero Baliardo. Anyway, if anyone has any info on this group I would greatly appreciate a heads up on it.
Thanks!

From: ana Fri, July 4 1997, 01:57:18 TO GK FANS
For anybody who's interested about the REYES FAMILY, PAUL (Pablo), FRANCOIS "CANUT", NICOLAS, PATCHAI and ANDRES are brothers, I don't know much about the REYES family, but this information I got was from the Video "TIERRA GITANA", and what I understood was that the "REYES FAMILY" fled from Spain because of some War that happened in Spain a long time ago and actually JOSE REYES' father was the leader of the gypsy community, they fled from Catalunia, Spain and settle in the southern part of France, Jose Reyes was born in Nimes, France. He had eleven children, five boys and six girls all born in France. He used to play with "MANITAS DE PLATA", (Ricardo Baliardo) in "Fiestas", weddings at Ste. Marie des Mer, in Arles, France. He met Pablo Picasso and he used to play at his house with a photographer named Lucien Clergue. They all used to go to the Bullfights in France. Then when all the REYES kids grew up they formed a group called JOSE REYES ET LOS REYES, however CHICO BOUCHIKI was on their group, I believe he's the brother-in-law of los Reyes Brothers, and he separated from the group I don't know for what reason. But CHICO has an excellent CD, called "VAGABUNDO" and the other one is called "TENGO, TENGO", for anybody who's interested in his music, he's got an excellent voice. JOSE REYES then later on died of lung cancer in 1979. Also the "BALIARDO FAMILY", are made of PACO, TONINO and DIEGO, which are the sons of "MANITAS DE PLATA" (Ricardo Baliardo) but they also have other brother called Maniero Baliardo, they used to played with the REYES FAMILY at Ste. Marie de la Mer, since they also are related. I believe they are cousins. The beautiful thing about the Gypsy Culture is that they will always preserved the Culture, and when they sing some of their songs, they do it on the CALO or ROMANI language. For anybody who's interested in LOS REYES old music, try "HOMMAGE A JOSE REYES, FLAMENCO PASSION", or "Los Reyes at Ste Marie des Mer", "Jose Reyes et Los Reyes (Gitan Poete)", and "Jose Reyes et Los Reyes (L'Amour D'un Jour)" and the single of "BOLERO (CANUT REYES)". I also believe that the REYES family have several cousins, which they are excellent singers as well, but they haven't achieved the success as the REYES family, I believed some of their cousins are called the "GYPSY REIGN", which they have an excellent song called "LA NOCHE" which is my favorite. What I got out of the documentary, was that the REYES family suffered a lot. Since Gypsies have been discriminated all through Europe. One of my favorite tunes from the flamenco singing (of course FLAMENCO is so complex, it has several ramifications, like Bulerias, Sevillanas, Soleares, Tarantas, etc.) from the REYES, is "CANTE JONDO", which is less than RUMBA beat, is more mellow, slow and it has to do a lot with the vocal chords. And NICOLAS, CANUT AND PATCHAI sing one tune which is called "FANDANGO DE LOS REYES" and NICOLAS'S voice is just the most beautiful voice I've ever heard in my life, of course that's my personal opinion. Cante Jondo describes more of what Gypsies have been through their lives, suffering, etc. It is like Soul Music but of course with the Arabic, flamenco flavor. Another song to listen is "VIENTO DE ARENA", which is sung in the CALO language. The beautiful thing about the REYES, is that after being so famous world-wide they are still very humble and simple. They still visit their Aunts, cousins and still try to help the whole family. Also one beautiful thing about the "RAZA CALO, is that they are extremely family oriented. I love "la race Calo". By the way, I'm going to Arles, France this year. Hopefully I can see the Gypsy community where the GYPSY KINGS grew up. I know that once a year the whole gypsy community reunite at "STE MARIE DE LA MER", from the 23rd to the 27th of May to celebrate the Virgin of STE MARIE. That's all the information I got out of the documentary. I would like to know if anybody knows where can I obtain the Video of the 1990' US TOUR and the other one is "Concert Video at the Greek Theatre", and finally the "FUEGO SPECIAL" Video. Please, write to me anybody who knowsmore in depth about the REYES FAMILY. Thanks to all.

From: Rick Amancio Fri, June 27 1997, 15:23:13 GK related CD's
if anybody's interested, i happened to be at Best Buys yesterday, and happened to
come across a cd from "gitano family" titled "Sara, Sara". There was
no credits on the back so i wasn't sure if it was the same Gitano Family
that released "Roque Rock" back in 92 (Patchai and his nephews). I tried to
find out if it was them, but i couldn't tell. It's on the same label and
some of the songs are Jose Reyes' (voi, voi, voi, and another one from
the Gitan poete album). I went back to get it today but it was gone, so
i'll have to wait till i see it again. If anyone's trying to find the
"Jose Reyes y los Reyes" albums, you might actually find them at your local
Circuit City stores. Surprisingly, i've seen them there from time to time,
and as most people aren't aware of them, they don't sell out too quickly.
And even though they're imports, they still cost appr. $12.98, so they're
a very good buy. Later!

From: Dan Raymond Sat, June 21 1997, 00:00:26 Vancouver, British Columbia
The show in General Motors Place, the palacial new hockey/basketball coliseum known
as "The Garage," was quite an event. The stage was set up along one side of the rink
instead of an end so the setting was much more intimate than the average arena venue.
At either side of the huge dance floor, which was situated directly in front of the
stage, were two temporary nightclubs filled with well-dressed rich folk eating tapas
and enjoying waiter service form the bars. Anyone who had a lower level ticket had
access to the floor, so it got packed quickly. There was some dancing taking place but mostly it was like a mosh pit at a Nirvana show up front. The Gipsy Kings played two
sets of 50 and 55 minutes in duration. The highlight for me was the inclusion of many
new songs and a great "paso doble" which just has to be on the new record. Their
merchandise was poor, to say the least. They could really use a good merch manager.
After doing some shows last summer with the masters of merch (KISS), I know what is
possible in the highly profitable and fan-satisfying world of trinkets and such.
Monsieur Martinez, ecoutez-vous? I can hardly wait to see them again and next time it
will hopefully be with Chieko and family. Thanks for all the contributions.
Hasta tarde vosotros,

The Gypsy Kings are coming to my city on Aug 28th!! Can't wait!!! I've just read the concert
reviews from other fans on your site. It was great!! I've written to you before just to compliment you
on your web site. I, too, would also like bio info on their ages, families etc.. I've learned
alot from all the web sites this I've found. I love Canut's voice and would love to hear
him more often. My husband and I are taking our two children to the concert along with friends and
their children also. My children know all their songs and sing along. I translate for them
the best I can. They did not give a concert in my city last year so we are so excited for this upcoming
concert. I promise to write to you after the concert here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. When they were
here two years ago they seemed genuinely surprised that anyone in Minnesota had even heard of them.
Their faces lit up when we gave them a tunderous welcome!! I hope that by the time they arrive
in Minneapolis they are not too tried of touring and will enjoy their visit. Keep up the good work!
I'll visit again soon! Buenas noches, Victoria
